Draft Misery 2002: Juan Carlos Navarro

Written By Chris C-Ford ---- Thursday, June 18, 2009

With the 40th pick in the 2002 NBA Draft the Washington Wizards select: Juan Carlos Navarro, Guard, Spain.

When the Wiz drafted Navarro, he was still under contract with his European team. He played the following season in Spain instead of with the Wizards.

Fast forward to 2007 and Navarro was still playing in Spain, but was looking at getting a buyout for his contract and playing in the NBA. The Wizards didn't want to deal with him and decided to trade him (his draft rights) to the Grizzlies, which may have eventually semi-turned into Javaris Crittenton.

Bottom line is that Navarro couldn't cut it in the NBA. He was too much of a baby and didn't like Memphis. Instead of being an average player in a good league, he preferred to be a star in a bad league. That's the spirit!

Using a draft pick on a guy with a long contract in another country? Nice one Wiz.

Diagnosis: Euro-Bust!

Where is he now?

JCN has left the NBA and returned to his old team FC Barcelona in Spain for the Spanish Liga ACB (AsociaciĆ³n de Clubs de Baloncesto). The team also plays in Euroleague and Navarro was the MVP.
