Deshawn Part I: 2000 NBA Draft

Written By Chris C-Ford ---- Tuesday, July 17, 2007

In honor of Deshawn Stevenson being re-signed for too much money, I feel it is only right to take a look back at some of the great DeShawn Stevenson moments of all time

With the 23rd Pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, The Utah Jazz Select DeShawn Stephenson, Guard, Washington Union High School.

Who? Ah yes I remember the drafts filled with unknown high school players. Jazz fans couldn't have been too happy but there were no Blogs back then, so how would one ever know.

I myself would rather ride in one of Karl Malone's big rigs for a summer listening to endless "You should work hard like Karl Malone did" speeches than have some unknown draftee on my team….Even If It Was You Kwame Brown. Oh damn, it was also you.

Hours after becoming an NBA first rounder, the trouble had already began.
SoCalHoops had a pretty good summary.

"So what does a young man do who has just been plucked from high school to play with Karl Malone and John Stockton for the Utah Jazz? Does he say, 'Wow, I'm going to Disneyland' . . . ? Nope. Instead he heads over to a local high school gym, where things get pretty ugly. You know the phrase 'I went to a fight and a basketball game broke out. . . '? "

Deshawn and a friend were arrested just hours after the draft for some kind of brawl. (he claimed he was signing autographs and jumped by 5 dudes) I can't imagine it being like the Piston's brawl, but I hope it was like this great 80's basketball brawl.

One day, and trouble already. What could the future possibly hold for this young man out of Fresno? (and where is Jason Summers now?)
