The Latest Trade Rumor: Manu Manu Ginobili

Written By Chris C-Ford ---- Thursday, June 11, 2009

Via Bullets Forever, The San Antonio Express News web site has an interesting article today about a trade that was allegedly offered last season by a mystery team. Let's pretend it was the Zards calling up the Spurs to discuss a trade of, as Greg Popovitch put it "one helluva player" for Ginobili.

The trade never happened, but I wonder who would have beenthat "helluva player"? Would it be Andray Blatche? Haha. But seriously. Gilbert Arenas? Doubtful. It would have to be either Antawn Jamison or Caron Butler.

Are either of those guys "one helluva player"? Not really, but lets pretend the following:

Last season the NBA trade deadline was February 19th. February 11th was Ginobili's last game played before that deadline. He missed some games with an ankle injury and things didn't look good. Finally on the day of the trade deadline, it was announced Manu would be out for 2-3 weeks.

Was the trade going to be for a healthy Ginobili? Would it be for a limping Ginobili? Would it be for an injured Ginobili?

The mystery team (Wizards) saw Ginobili go down and tried to make a deal for an injured player right near the deadline. I don't think a healthy Manu would ever be traded for an Antawn or Caron. But when he went down, that was the Wizards chance. Since the current season was in the tank, they didn't mind getting an injured guy, because he would be healthy for the next season.

That trade would have been beneficial for the Spurs (for that season) because they would get to replace Ginobili with another all star in the lineup, and help them try for a championship. The Spurs didn't pull the trigger, and counted on Manu coming back after the 3 weeks. Instead he tried, but was eventually out for the season and the Spurs had no shot.

How about this lineup if that fantasy trade went through?

PG: Gilbert Arenas
SG: Manu Ginobili
SF: Caron Butler
PF: Blake Griffin
C: Brendan Haywood

Well now the Wizards have put in the call for real! At this point they would probably have to make a big trade, and this would be the lineup instead...

PG: Manu Ginobili
SG: Gilbert Arenas
SF: Caron Butler
PF: Andray Blatche
C: Brendan Haywood

I doubt Manu will be traded, but the Wiz could use a guy who flops and throws elbows...
